FEI President at Pony Club CentreFEI President, HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein visited Somerby Equestrian Centre, Leicestershire and the International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH) headquarters, Norfolk on Saturday, 24th  February. Somerby Equestrian Centre runs one of many Pony Club Centre Membership programmes, designed for children who do not own their own pony but would like to become involved in Pony Club activities and do so through their local riding school.  The scheme was instigated in 1998 and in 2005 received substantial funding from Sport England as part of a joint initiative with the British Equestrian Federation to improve participation. During her visit Princess Haya also visited the ILPH Headquarters in Norfolk.  During a tour of the facilities at Hall Farm the party had the opportunity to meet horses currently undergoing rehabilitation and find out more about the work of the ILPH both in the UK and overseas. See here for full news from both visits.

  • UK Coaching Certificate – frequently asked questions now online

All member bodies of the British Equestrian Federation have worked together to produce a United Kingdom Coaching Certificate (UKCC) in Equestrian Sport. The UKCC is a UK wide, 5 level framework for endorsing qualifications, providing a framework for coaches working at all levels and in all environments. The UKCC will ensure that equestrian coaches are delivering safe, high quality, rider centred coaching. Ultimately this will lead to success by helping to raise performance standards and increase enjoyment of riding ensuring that the UK becomes recognised as a world leader in coach development. Further information is now available on the BEF website, including frequently asked questions and a list of discipline specific contacts.

  • LTAD BrochureLong Term Athlete Development (LTAD) document now available

The BEF has created a LTAD programme as a central reference point for coaches, parents, facilities managers, competition organisers and all members of the federation. It details how equestrian athletes can improve their performance whether in a competitive or leisure environment. It identifies pathways to aid the development of riders, drivers and vaulters. The Eventing Performance riders met in the Cotswolds for their first squad session of the year earlier this month. Jumping sessions with Kenneth Clawson and Dressage with Tracey Robinson were complimented by access to Team Physiotherapist, Andy Thomas and Team Vet Jenny Hall. Home visits are ongoing for the Dressage riders and the Performance Para Dressage riders are due to meet for their first session of the year in early March.

The Development Programme, with several changes to the squads this year,  is also well underway. The first squad sessions of the year took place in February with the Start and Potential Eventing squads attending separate sessions. The Dressage riders met together for their session where international dressage judge, Wim Earnes from the Netherlands was invited over to coach the riders. The Para Dressage squad met for a sports science and medicine day where the riders worked on reflection skills with the sports psychologist and were given a variety of presentations and workshops. The Show Jumpers first session is scheduled for March.

The Equine Pathway is also gathering a head of steam, with squad sessions and "home visits" being undertaken during January and February.
