Flare or Flag 3

Build up exercise

Full flare, taking leg and arm out separately

Method

  • The vaulter moves into the correct bench position.
  • They then extend the leg in to it’s correct position, once balanced they can extend the inside arm out in front of them.

Correct flare position

What to look for

  • The shoulders should remain level at all times.

The arm should be straight with the hand flat and fingers together. The supporting arm should

  • remain slightly bent.
  • The back should be fairly flat, with the hips level.
  • The weight should be though the whole lower leg; you should not be able to see daylight under the leg.
  • The upper leg should remain straight, with the toe pointed.
  • Once the vaulter has good balance with this exercise, they should aim to have their hand and foot at the same level, creating a smooth arch from hand, across the back to the foot.
  • The head should be up and visible over the upper arm. The vaulter should look over the horses’ ears.

Tips

  • Make sure that the vaulter has a good bench before going into flare leg and that the flare leg is good before they extend the arm.
  • If the shoulders are not level ask them to return to bench and feel what level shoulders feel like and then ask them to try again, but just lift the arm and don’t reach forward.
