PADS REQUIRED FOR VAULTING

Back Pad

Usually made of felt 3cm thick or can be made from wool blankets folded and stitched together.

New light weight materials now available.

Pad covers should be detachable for ease of washing and should be of natural fabric (not poly cotton), which may be towelling or heavy drill.  Make them close fitting and choose the fabric carefully.  They can be made like a pillow case or with a zip across the back 30 cm in from front edge to lie under the roller - zip uppermost with foam roller pad laid on top before the roller.  I.e. in the centre of the sandwich! Another alternative is Velcro.

Maximum size for competition 110cm long  x 90cm across back

Competition Pads may be purchased, from specialist retailers (continental), which are made from a type of foam.  These are light weight durable and do not absorb water.

Covers are available to match

Continental suppliers found on www – try:  www.voltigiershop.de

Roller Pad

These are made from foam, which can be cut and purchased from foam centres or bought from specialist supplier.

Choose foam density carefully to allow the roller to bed down into pad but absorb pressure too.  Too dense causes the roller to sit proud and the pad to keep popping out and foam that is too soft collapses and does not dissipate the pressure points.

Approx size       205cm long

                         30cm wide

                           5cm thick

There may be a need for extra thickness under the roller which is about 120 cm long to lie under area beneath the handles.  This section usually needs to be denser than the rest to absorb the extra pressure placed here - Prolite or similar gel type foam can be very useful here.  Place this extra thickness in the centre third of the full-length cover next to the horse.

All pads require fitted detachable & washable covers made of natural fabrics

Do not use bare foam as it sweats up the horse and is easily torn and damaged when adjusting the girth

Shoes for Vaulters

Gymnastic slippers with non-slip sloes are used but for beginners simple back gym shoes are suitable but trainers are not.
