·         To maintain a steady rein contact both with the side reins and the lunge and never turn in on the circle

·         To make smooth transitions between paces and direct transitions walk/canter

·         To maintain a calm and steady rhythm in all paces on a 15m circle.

·         To accept the ‘ bareback’ feel of vaulting

·         To carry weight on all parts of his body

Calmness is all important and from this confidence grows

Remember the better the horse’s general education and balance the better its ability on the lunge.  The perfect horse is yet to be born but the temperament of the vaulting horse is of paramount importance, most else can be taught or improved if the temperament of the horse is right and also a good match with the person in charge of lungeing.  They must suit each other and have built up a total trust in each other before vaulting can begin.
