3. Mount.

Correct mount

Method; Following step 4. of the mounting exercise the vaulter pulls their body towards the horse and lowers their leg down. They should then land on the horses back. They may need to pull again when they have landed because they have not landed in the middle of the horse. The vaulter should aim to have their hips above their head.

Correct mount (this will not be possible for all but the most talented male vaulters)

Examples of bad mounts

  1. Body and hips turned towards the horse, the vaulter mounts through box splits not long splits. Vaulter needs to keep shoulders and hips parallel to the horses and mount through long splits.

  1. Vaulter mounts with bent legs, head and shoulders are in a good position. Vaulter needs to straighten their legs.

  1. The vaulter mounts by jumping head and shoulders up and leaning on the outside elbow. The vaulter needs to lean on the inside elbow and keep the outside one in the air during mounting. They should also look at the floor to help keep their head down.
