Vaulting Competitions

Job specification for stewards

The job of the steward is very important, as the smooth running of the competition depends on the skill of the steward to keep to time. The competitors require to warm up but there is often too little space and not enough time. The steward has to juggle between keeping people happy and safety.

Skills required: diplomacy, communication, firmness and organization..

Equipment: Clip board, pen, programme with running order

Normally horses are allowed to walk round the edge of the competition area prior to the competition starting.

Each competition will have different rules according to the space available. Horses under saddle and horses on the lunge should be kept to different areas and  separated by a physical barrier.

Discuss requirements with Competition Organiser and stick to what is agreed. Be prepared to be firm with vaulters and people who should not be in the collecting area.

  • Arrive in plenty time to check out what the arrangements are for warm-up.
  • Collect clipboard with programme and running order.
  • Collect walkie-talkies if available.
  • Check what time the competition is due to start.
  • Check where vaulters are allowed and not allowed.
  • Check the collecting ring  and lunge areas. Ideally each should be separated.
  • Check entrance.
  • Check where the vaulters run in and run out of the competition circle.
  • Keep these areas clear of other horses and vaulters
  • Note where Judge A is.
  • Advise competitors well in advance of their turn.
  • Make sure that the competition does start on time.
  • Always have next competitor lined up
  • Remind competitors that they have one minute to salute after the judge rings the bell for their turn.
  • Not essential but helpful to remind competitors if they are not wearing a number.
